History 87, Fall 2001 |
History 87 Home Page This course is a lower division survey of history on the Japanese islands from prehistoric to modern times largely through art and literature. This is not an art history course, but rather we will think about how such materials as paintings, architecture, poetry, essays etc. can be used as historical sources that relate information about society, culture and politics. The readings have been chosen, for the most part, to give you examples of how historians may use these materials. My lectures will balance a history of politics and institutions with social and cultural history. Attendance at discussion sessions run by the Teacher's Assistant is required. | |
